Maybe he couldn’t get through it? It’s REALLY easy although I question the wisdom in this method of escape. Seems more like a suicide attempt to me.
1 – Take the plunger from the right side of the bed and go right two screens.
2 – Take the sun glasses and lighter from the desk and go right one screen.
3 – Take the green keys from the top shelf and go right two screens.
4 – Click on the box with the green lock. Use the keys in the lock. Use the plunger in the lock. Take the screw driver. Go right two screens.
5 – Click on the chest. Use your screw driver on the sun glasses. Use the plastic piece to pick the lock and get the gas can. Go right one screen.
6 – Use the gas can on the door. Use the lighter on the gas and you are free.
